Nudibranchs, also known as sea slugs, are soft-bodied marine snails belonging to the suborder Nudibranchia ((Phylum - Mollusca, Class - Gastropoda, Order - Opisthobranchia). There are over 3,000 described species worldwide. The word "nudibranch" comes from Latin nudus meaning "naked", and Greek brankhia meaning "gills".
They are carnivorous. Some feeding on sponges, others on bryozoans, others on hydroids, and some are cannibals, eating other sea slugs, or even members of their own species.
Some divers confuse Nudibranchs with Flatworms (see our web page for some examples) If you would like to know more about Nudibranchs or Flatworms why not consider our Underwater Naturalist Course. Or if you'd like to take photographs like these, perhaps our Digital Photography Course
