Training - Divemaster

 

The PADI Divemaster course is your first step to making diving a professional career.

The goals of the course are:-

Content The Divemaster course consists of three phases or modules:

Module One: Watermanship and skill assessment. This module takes place in the pool and can be done one phase at a time or all in one session. It is designed to test your physical fitness, assess your rescue skills, assess your personal diving skills and test your thinking under pressure.

  1. Watermanship and stamina, 400m swim (no aids), 800m snorkel (Mask, fins & snorkel only), 100m tired diver tow (full kit), Tread water for 15 minutes.

  2. Problem solving, Equipment exchange. Swap mask, fins and scuba unit with another diver whilst buddy breathing.

  3. General diving skills. Skill Circuit. Perform basic diving skills with a high degree of competence, ideally to demonstration standard.

  4. Diver rescue skills. Approach, lift to surface, administer artificial ventilation while towing and de-kitting an unconscious diver.

Module Two: Knowledge development This module tests your knowledge of divemaster duties and general diving theory. The first three exams must be completed near the start of the course before you can deal with students in the water. The other five exams can be completed in your own time before the end of the course.

Eight exams in total. The first three must be completed at the start of your course and all the information is covered in your PADI Divemaster manual.

The information for exams four to eight is covered in the Encyclopaedia, the Diving Knowledge Workbook and The Wheel Instruction booklet. These can be covered by instructor lectures or home study with the materials above, or a combination of both.

Underwater Map - put together a map of a dive site (see section two of the Divemaster manual for more information).
Emergency assistance plan - put together an easy to follow plan on how to deal with a variety of diving emergency situations i.e. missing diver, unconscious diver on the surface, etc, as well as emergency contact numbers and information. (Your instructor will talk to you about the two exercises above in more detail when you do the course).

Module Three: Practical Application. This module is designed to give you experience of looking after students both in and out of the water. The sessions can take the form of ' actual courses' with real students, or mock-up sessions with people playing the roles of students. Most instructors may have you do a bit of both.

Option A: practical training exercises simulated to provide experience in diver training in a variety of situations.

Option B: During real on-going courses i.e. Open Water, Advanced or Rescue, each candidate must act as an instructional assistant during five confined water sessions and ten open water sessions. The candidate should work with the course instructor to plan all the logistics of these training sessions and be available to assist and/or advise students.

Course Prerequisites  PADI Advanced and PADI Rescue diver certification or equivalent, Minimum age of 18 years. Current diving medical. MINIMUM of 20 logged dives to commence the course and 60 (including experience in deep diving, night diving and underwater navigation) before certification can be approved. Have current training in first aid and have successfully completed a course in CPR within 24 months prior to the Divemaster certification date (e.g. EFR Course).

Costs The basic cost of the Divemaster Course includes all instruction and the PADI Divemaster manual. It does not include your PADI Divemaster membership.

Not Included Any other incidental costs such as kit hire, any overnight stays, boat fees, air files, etc are the responsibility of the student. However you will have the choice at all times as to whether you want to incur these costs beforehand. You are recommended to buy 'PADI Encyclopaedia of Recreational Diving', 'Diving Knowledge Workbook' and both versions of the Recreational Dive Planner.
